What makes a set verily great? Are there incontrovertible things large sets own that lesser sets do not? If a big set is the product of prior years’ unfolding, then shouldn’t earlier years be considered herculean as well? Just what is it that pushes the gigantic set to a higher smooth? I’ve asked myself these questions a sum up of times while hand this countdown. And while their answers are solid to pin down in the majority of cases (because there are very sets that rest on the feet apart from the package), 1992 Topps is not the same: There’s more than one thing that elevates it to magnitude.
In 1991, Topps debuted gold baffle stamping on some of the subset cards in the Archer set. (Topps also added a diminutive gold circumvent palm tree tone to a miniscule greatness of its flagship and sent them to gangs as part of their Desert Buckler distribution program.) Attractive in a footnote philanthropic of way, the gold disappoint itself didn’t add much to overall card plan. If anything, it was a ‘hey, direct the eye what we can do’ friendly of thing. That changed for 1992, which saw Topps augment its gold frustrate stamp quotient exponentially, resulting in the Topps Gold of little or no worth set parallel. In reality, there were two parallels—Gold and Gold Winners—but nobody truly wanted Gold Winners: they were much easier to find than right up Gold (this deviation could very well have been the first instance of tiered desirability). And though Gold technically wasn’t the first duration Topps had done a cheap set parallel (the Tiffany sets of the 1980s were Topps’ first real parallel sets), it was the first equidistant throughout randomly inserted in packs (Topps Tiffany cards had been to be availed of only as complete, residence of factors-sealed sets).
In adding to the introduction of widespread gold baffle stamping,...
