The card was created by the American Tobacco Group (ATC) between 1909 and 1911. ATC used the cards as a promotional instrument to help put up to sale their cigarettes. ATC required the warrant of the players to bring into being the cards and Wagner was in a great degree sought after due to his station as one of the game's greatest players. Wagner, however, refused to let the product of the card endure and only 50 to 200 of them were put into motion in a circle.
According to an October 12, 1912 impression of "The Sporting Advice", Wagner responded to ATC's prayer by writing that "he did not worry to have his picture in a bale of cigarettes."He further threatened to sue ATC if they produced the card.
There are a few theories as to why Wagner pulled the stopper on ATC. The two leading ones are that he didn't dearth children to buy cigarettes to get his card and that he wanted more recompense from ATC.
